My yorkshire terrier is about 7 years old. I have him and another dog who is a girl. The girl is spayed, but my boy isn’t. I was really little when we got him, so we didn’t get him neutered then, and I didn’t think much of his behaviors like humping his toy and stuff, but now he just stares at the girl dog and whimpering and stuff. So I think it’s best to get him neutered. All I’m wondering is if it will affect his health in anyway since he’s way past the recommended age. Help!

We got my male neutered around 8- he was a show dog before then, which is why we waited, but once his career was over it was best to get him fixed.
He did just fine with the surgery, and since then he hasn’t been paying any attention to females, fixed or unfixed.
There is no “recommended age”. As long as he is healthy otherwise, there is no reason why he won’t be perfectly ok. Much older dogs than him get neutered and are fine. At 7 he is only middle aged – hardly old! Lord, he could have another 7 years ahead of him yet if you keep him healthy.
Put crudely, wouldn’t you rather he was neutered now when he is healthy than if he got testicular cancer and had to have his testicles removed when he was already vulnerable?
If your dog is 7 years old it is not to old to get neutered. It will be fine.
Where he is a small dog he has a longer life expectancy than a large breed. I would defiantly recommend that you do get him neutered, due to the fact that the percentage of male dogs that die due to prostate cancer, masses, and enlargement is VERY high in intact ( unentered ) males. The neuter procedure is far less intrusive than the spay procedure, and the aspect of dog going into heat isn’t there as he is not a female so he is at much LOWER risk than a female his age getting spayed. Sometimes due to the age there can be an excess of bleeding during the procedure, and he may have a longer recovery period. But the pros defiantly outweigh the cons in your situation and I would recommend that you go ahead with the procedure.
i don’t think so but doctor’s would think his age is not worth doing it because he is old thats all
You can always neuter a dog, its best to neuter them when they are younger. Since he is older it is still fine to neuter him, neutering a dog can prolong their life. It can decrease his chances of testicular and prostate cancer. Since he is 7, its best to run a pre anesthetic blood profile before hand. This will check his liver, kidneys, red and white cells. He still is probably going to hump his toy it may not change his behavior much, but its best for his health.
you should ask a vet they will know
=)
hi,
Spaying or neutering will keep your dog from getting pregnant or impregnating another dog. Females get the spay surgery, which removes the ovaries and uterus, while a neuter surgery removes a male dog’s testicles.
here are some guidelines:

hope this helps.
