elderly dog going to the toilet prob?

the problem is this…my little dog is very elderly (17 human yrs). She is blind, mainly deaf with a little arthritis in her back. Other than that, she is in very good health. The problem is that she is wee-ing upstairs on the carpet more and more often. During the day, she stays outside under the pergola and goes to the toilet just near there. The trouble happens when she’s upstairs. Generally she’s only upstairs when we’re there. We take her downstairs regularly but that’s not really working.
This may sound bizarre but do you think little nappies would work?
I could put them on her when she’s upstairs for the night.
what do you think?

  1. I wouldn’t put nappies on an animal that is just so un natural. You have to accept the fact that your dog is getting old and is becoming incontinent. At the same time if it has just started to increase it could be a urinary infection. You really should get it checked out by a vet.. Good luck.

  2. It would work, and they do make such things.

Have you considered showing her a special spot upstairs, properly papered or covered with “wee wee” training pads, where she’s allowed to go when she’s upstairs?

  3. I think this is more of a movement issue than a toilet issue. If she knows to go outside when she’s downstairs, I’d say it’s likely she’s just old and the stairs are getting tough on her. She doesn’t want to go all the way downstairs to pee, so she just goes on the floor. Get a diaper for her when she’s upstairs.

  4. gud ole kuntry boy

it is common for older dogs to have incontinence. You could have her checked to make sure there is nothing else going on like an infection. I would try putting pads down for her where you want her to potty.

  5. You should probably ask your vet their opinion on the matter. I would say due to my experience (my last dog, lived to be age 14, and my current dog, age 15) that your dog may have a bladder issue.
